Marshel D. Fredrickson

Marshel Dean Fredrickson, the son of William “Bud” Martin and Elsie Anna (Petershon) Fredrickson, was born on August 8, 1924 in Creston, Iowa. Marshel entered eternal rest on August 31, 2016 at Greater Regional Hospice House, Creston, Iowa at the age of ninety-two years and twenty-three days.
Marshel graduated 8th grade at St. Malachy School in June, 1938 and from Creston High School with the Class of 1942. He was inducted into the United States Army in July of 1943. Marshel was stationed in Wales in the 28th Division. They went by L.S.D. boat to Omaha Beach, Normandy, France on the sixth day of the invasion. After thirty days, a German shell hit the hedge rows and four of their men were blown out of their fox holes by the explosion. Marshel was hit and had three surgeries to remove the shrapnel from his leg. He received the European, Middle East Theatre ribbons, bronze star, good conduct medal, purple heart, and the meritorious unit award. Marshel was honorably discharged in January of 1946.
Upon returning from the service, Marshel worked for Kerr-Cochran Chevrolet Garage detailing cars and operating the wrecker. On February 28, 1949, Marshel married Agnes C. Waske at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Afton, Iowa. He worked at the Creston Hospital as a purchasing agent for twenty years. Marshel also worked for the U.S. Post Office; owned a restaurant called the Midget Café which was located on North Maple Street; was a switchman on the railroad; and managed the Conoco Gas Station.
Marshel was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church; the VFW Post; and Lakeshore Golf Club. Marshel enjoyed golfing when he was able and liked to hunt and fish. He was an avid college football and basketball fan.
Left to cherish Marshel’s memory are his children: Connie Fredrickson, Creston; David (Donna) Fredrickson, Polk City, Iowa; and John Fredrickson, Afton; his four grandchildren: Andy and Matt; Caleb and Elaina; his five great-grandchildren: Lorellye, Lilly and Lenden; Taylor and Teryn; his sisters-in-law: Norma Fredrickson, Arizona; Alice Fredrickson, California; and Joan Waske, Afton; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Preceding Marshel in death were his parents; his wife, Agnes in 2012; his brothers: Martin Fredrickson and Willard Fredrickson; his sister, Barbara Miller; and his brother-in-law, Dwight Miller.
