Allen Edwin Mc Manis “Mac”, the son of Irma and Clyde McManis, was born on July 18, 1936 at Little Sioux, Iowa. Allen entered eternal rest on August 28, 2009 at Adair County Hospital in Greenfield, Iowa at the age of 73.
Allen grew up mostly in Corning and graduated from Corning High School in 1954. After graduation he blue-grassed from Missouri to South Dakota for a short time before he started hauling rock and working at the rock quarry in Corning. On June 24, 1956, he married Eleanor King of Corning and shortly after in December of 1956 he and his wife moved to Long Beach, California where Allen worked at the GM plant. In 1957, the two moved to Colorado where he worked at Garnsy Wheeler Ford where he learned body paint and upholstery and started his life-time love for working on vehicles. Allen was a very talented and highly respected entrepreneur. He and his wife started and owned many businesses in their years together where they always worked side by side. In 1958, the couple returned to Corning where Allen worked for Cambell Tindall doing body work for a year before opening his own shop. He also joined the Army Reserves in 1958 and served six months active duty and stayed in the reserves for eight years. In 1959, Allen and Eleanor opened their own body and upholstery shop, Macs Body Shop, where the two worked hand in hand until 1971.
The couple had their two children during that time: Rick, who was born in 1959 and Becky, who was born in 1964. Allen served as the Adams County Deputy Sheriff for a few years beginning in 1969 upon graduating from the Law Enforcement Academy. In 1971 the couple purchased a farm northeast of Corning where they worked diligently together and lived there until 1982. After leaving the farm, Allen and Eleanor would winter in Florida where he laid brick and return in the summer where he helped out at Rays Feed Seed. It wasnt until 1984 that the two would re-open Mac Body Shop and continued working on vehicles. During that time they also built and managed The Mighty Car Wash in 1994 and ran the body shop and car wash both until 1997. In 1998, the two opened the Lake Icaria Beach concession stand and ran it for eight years throughout the summer of 2005 until Allen was unable to do due to heart complications.
Allen loved many things throughout his life. He loved his wife dearly and treasured working side by side with her throughout their many years together. He truly enjoyed his family and friends and spent as much time with them as he could. Allen enjoyed working the Volkswagen bug that he and Eleanor purchased in 2001 and is still a work in progress. He loved fishing with the grandchildren whenever possible. He always loved seeing the ocean and mountains and would vacation in Florida through many winters. He had a sincere love for life and lived it to the fullest.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Eleanor of Corning; his children: Rick (Jill) of Red Oak and Becky (Jeff) Hedinger of Corning; his grandchildren: Jared (Erin) McManis of Essex, Jason (Jamie) McManis of Corning, Adam and Andrew Hedinger of Corning; step-grandchildren: Josh, Caleb and Eli Gould of Red Oak; great-grandchildren: Zane McManis and Aaron Armstrong; brothers/sisters-in-law: Margery (Aubrey) Herrick of Waterloo, Helen (Delmar) Henry of Titusville, Florida and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
