C. Norvell Houck

July 17, 1937 — September 27, 2012

Clifford Norvell Houck, son of Clifford Earl and Mary Cecelia (Quinn) Houck, was born on July 17, 1937 near Carbon, Iowa. Norvell entered eternal rest on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Corning, Iowa at the age of seventy-five years, two months and ten days.
Norvell attended Corning High School and graduated with the Class of 1954. On April 6, 1957, Norvell was united in marriage to Phyllis Arlene Mullin in Council Bluffs, Iowa and two children were born to bless this union: Joni and Jeff.
Norvell was proud to live in Adams County and it was evident in his endless support in the Adams County area. Norvell enjoyed researching the history of Adams County. He also spent many hours researching the history of Carbon, which is displayed in the Carbon Hall. Norvell was instrumental in organizing the annual Coal Miners Reunion where he currently served as President.
Norvell was a grain and livestock farmer. He loved attending auctions at area sale barns to buy and sell livestock. He was particularly proud of the Dutch Belted Cattle that he raised. Farming was his passion and he farmed his entire life. Norvell served on many agricultural and community committees. Currently he was serving on the Southern Iowa Forage and Livestock Committee.
Norvell attended the Disciples of Christ Church in Prescott, Iowa.
Norvell was very much a people person and it didnt matter to him what station in life they had attained. If Norvell was able to help someone, he did. He loved to travel and enjoyed winter months in Texas. He enjoyed attending small town celebrations and he valued and appreciated the spirit of volunteering in preparation for community events. In later years, Norvell enjoyed coffee and conversation at the Star and the community projects they participated in. His love for people drew him to quietly minister to his community, as well as, his unknown friends in the missions in Council Bluffs and Des Moines.
Norvell will be sorely missed by his family, friends and his community.
Left to cherish Norvells memory is his wife of fifty-five years, Phyllis Houck of Corning, Iowa; daughter, Joni Houck of Ames, Iowa; brother, Ray (wife Jan) Houck of Corning, Iowa; two nieces: Jana and Jennifer and two nephews: Jeremy and James.
Norvell was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Jeff in 1984.
