Carl Patterson

Carl Calvin Patterson, the son of James Donovan and Wavel Marie (Hickman) Patterson, was born in Chariton, IA on April 10, 1936. Carl passed away suddenly, at his home in Corning, IA on Sunday, July 13, 2014 at the age of 78 years, three months and four days.
Carl was educated in the Chariton Public schools and graduated with the Class of 1954 from Chariton High School. Carl married Delena Henry in Lucas, IA on August 12, 1956 and two daughters: Carla and Paula, were born to bless this union. Carl began working for Hy-Vee Food Stores in Shenandoah, IA as the Produce Manager and was later promoted to Assistant Manager. He continued there for 10 years before accepting the Store Manager’s position in Corning in 1964. Carl retired in 1988 after 34 years of service to Hy-Vee. Following retirement, Carl and Delena traveled everywhere and anywhere to watch their grandchildren’s sporting events.
Carl was a faithful member of the Corning Christian Church and served the church in many different ways. Carl served for several years as the Treasurer of the ACIC and on the Board of Directors for the Corning Municipal Utilities. He was a long- time member the Corning Rotary Club and was named as a Paul Harris Fellow recipient. Carl volunteered as an Ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce and delivering Meals on Wheels for several years.
Left to mourn his passing is his wife of 57 years, Delena Patterson of Corning; his daughters: Carla Steele and significant other, Mark Gathercole of Des Moines, IA and Paula (Mark) Jones of Omaha, NE; four granddaughters: Alison, Anna, Lindsay and Whitney; three great-grandchildren: Kailee, Micah and Jaylen; Carl is also survived by a brother, Guy Dean (wife, Moe) Patterson of San Antonio, TX and two sisters: Grace Ann (Don) Holmes of Chariton, IA and Ida Mae (Billy) Carpenter of Allerton, IA; a sister-in-law, Kay (Tom) Fry of Corydon, IA; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding Carl in death were his parents; his mother and father-in law; his brother, Tom Patterson and a brother-in-law, Bill McClaflin.
