Crissie Lucas was born four miles south of Corning, Iowa on Wednesday, December 24, 1913. She was the third daughter born to Isaac and Isabel Harrison Lucas. Crissie entered eternal rest on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at the Bedford Nursing Rehab Center in Bedford, Iowa at the age of ninety-five years, eight months and three days.
When Crissie was a small child, the family moved to a farm three miles west of Lenox where she attended all eight grades at the Grove # 2 school. When she was young, she worked at home and for a neighbor.
At noon, on September 19, 1934, Crissie was united in marriage to Howard G. Pepper. The Rev. Homer Caskey performed the ceremony in Omaha, Nebraska. The newlyweds took a two week honeymoon trip to Colorado and returned to live with Howards parents near Bushville. A year and a half later, the young couple moved southwest of Brooks. Later, they lived in the Mercer Center Community for fourteen years. They joined the Mercer Center United Methodist Church in 1938, where Crissie was the oldest member. She enjoyed working with the ladies group. Howard and Crissie started their family after moving to Mercer. To this union three children were born: David Howard, October 14, 1939 who died at birth, Cathryn Ilene, born August 27, 1942 and Velda Jean, born December 12, 1944.
Crissie loved the farm and enjoyed working along side Howard and often she could be heard singing while milking the cows. She raised chickens and pet pigs. Once, while planting peas in her garden, one of her pigs followed eating the seeds as quickly as she planted them. She also enjoyed flying in their Piper Cub airplane.
On February 1952 the couple moved two miles south of Lenox. One of Crissies favorite activities was bowling, where she was on leagues in Lenox and Corning. She also enjoyed working with her flowers.
Due to Howards health, they moved to Corning on December 22, 1973. He passed away in 1976.
Crissie enjoyed quilting with the Corning Methodist Quilters and has made a quilt for each of her grandchildren.
On June 17, 1978 she was united in marriage to John A. Riegel, he passed away in 1996. They enjoyed traveling to many places including Hawaii and Alaska. John and Crissie enjoyed their visits to the residents each Friday evening at the nursing home.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Cathryn Hardee of Bedford, Iowa and Jean Croy of Monett, Missouri; four grandchildren: Brenda (Bill) Roser of Watonga, Oklahoma, Jeff Croy of Sebastian, Florida, Brian (Allison) Thomas of Corning, Iowa, John (Michelle) Croy of Ault, Colorado; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Preceding Crissie in death were her parents: Isaac, on September 8, 1961 and Isabel, on August 21, 1967; both husbands; son, David Howard Pepper; son-in-law, Dan Thomas; son-in-law, Robert Hardee; one brother, Tip Lucas and two sisters: Nellie OConnell and Mae Hunter.
