Dale Calkins

Burial will be at the Lincoln Center Cemetery in rural Adams County.
Dale “Ding” Calkins the son of Franklin and Anna Pearl (Septer) Calkins, was born on March 26, 1915 in Holt County, near Lynch, Nebraska. Dale entered eternal rest on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Corning, Iowa at the age of ninety-three years, seven months and nine days.
Dale attended Country School Woodside #2 and Cumberland High School. Dale was passionate about farming his entire life until ill health forced him to quit. He raised and broke quarter horses for use on his farm and loved to raise cattle and other livestock. The family has owned the farm for many years and it became a century farm in 1973.
Dale was married to Ethel Thelma Chambers on May 25, 1939 at the Methodist Parsonage in Carl, Iowa.
Four children were born to this blessed union: Janice, Jean, Jackie and Doug. This past May the couple celebrated 69 years of marriage.
Dales hobbies included the Hazel-Grove Card Club and bowling for several years. His interests and memberships were many. Dale was a Lincoln Township Trustee and member of the Adams County Board of Education for 25 years. He also served on the Board for the Learning Resource Center, serving several counties; was a R.E.C. Minuteman; longtime member of the Lincoln Center Church; Cattlemans Association; Share-A-Calf Program;
Served on all the church boards at the Lincoln Center Church, volunteering many hours of labor at the church. Dale was a very honest man and a man of great integrity. He will be greatly missed by many.
Left to cherish Dales memory is his wife, Ethel Calkins of Corning, Iowa; his daughters: Janice Calkins of Corning, Iowa, Jean (husband Larry) Tietz of Griswold, Iowa, and Jackie (husband Bruce) Mentzer of Schaller, Iowa; son, Doug (wife Elaine) Calkins of Cumberland, Iowa; five grandchildren: Deidre Tietz, Jamie (Mandi) Calkins, Andrea (Corey) Yearington, Sara (Chad) Steinkamp, and Mitch Mentzer; six great-grandchildren: Spencer, Logan and Dalton Calkins; Hunter McKenna Yearington; Josie Ann Steinkamp; sister, Rosemary Wilcynski of Tacoma, Washington; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding Dale in death were his parents; four brothers: George, Kenneth, Cecil and Duane; sisters: Darlene Eno and Dorothy Heurmann; three infant siblings; and a grandson, Marc Douglas Calkins.
