Donald Edgar Shires

Donald Edgar Shires, the only child of Harold Francis Shires and Leota
Myrtle (Buchanan) Shires was born December 12, 1923 in Morton Mills,
Montgomery County, Iowa, and passed away on May 3, 2008.
He attended rural schools in Montgomery County Iowa. Don graduated from Stennette Iowa High School where he was part of the Stennette
Fabulous Iron Men basketball team.
He married Hazel Hallene ORiley on March 4, 1943 at the Methodist Parsonage in Maryville, Missouri. He served in the Pacific Theatre during
World War II from December 30, 1944 to October 24, 1946. After his honorable separation from the military he returned to Iowa. He farmed in
the Nodaway Prescott area for 27 years before moving to Hawaii.
In Hawaii Don managed a large seed and feed corn operation on the Island of Oahu. While involved in this operation he was awarded the opportunity
of going to Africa to consult on a large seed corn operation that was being started there.
After the death of his wife Hallene on June 19, 1977 he returned to the Prescott, Iowa area. Here he worked in sales, traveling nine states as the companys top salesperson, until his retirement.
On April 2, 1983, in Reno, Nevada, he married Jeanne Madelyn (Hayes)
Hair.
Survivors include his three sons and their families, Bob and Linda (Illian)Shires and his three children, Wende Shires and family, Bobby and Patricia (Mullinix) Shires and family and Michelle (Shires) Poppe and family; Myron and Jan (Tucker) Shires and their five children, Darwin and Lori (Crill) Shires and family, Larry (Zoomer) and Debbie (Shires) Westphal and family, Donna Shires and Dean Schaffer (fiance) and family, Donald and Jennifer (Clark) Shires, Danny and Sally (Mann) Shires and family;and Kenneth (Tank) Harold Shires.In the autumn years of his life Don embarked on a newfound hobby
of woodworking. He pursued this hobby with the same zestful work ethic he had demonstrated to his children and grandchildren through
out his life.Don loved his family and this love has been demonstrated through his woodworking. He began each project with a standing tree. After
several labor intensive steps, he transformed that tree into handmade cedar chests for every child, grandchild and great-grandchild in his
family. His love will be remembered and will be passed on for generations to come.
