Elizabeth Means

June 6, 1919 — December 28, 2006

A private service will be held at a later date.
Elizabeth Marie (Haggerty) Means, daughter of Luella G. Alexander and Jesse O. Haggerty was born on a farm in Mercer Township on June 6, 1919 along with her twin brother Lawrence. She died at Mercy Hospital in Corning on December 28, 2006 at the age of 87, six months and 22 days. Elizabeth, or Liz as she was more commonly known, lived her entire life in Adams County, Iowa and most of it in Corning, Iowa.
She went to country schools, attended Corning High School and left the farm to work in Corning. On February 19, 1942 she married Shelburn Means. From that union came three children, Harrison J. Means, Ronald D. Means, and Sue R. (Means) Kingery. After her children were in school, she began her long employment at the Adams County Assessors Office where she worked full time from July 1, 1963 to July 1, 1982. Thereafter, she continued to work part-time at the Assessors Office until June 30, 1993. She was highly respected by her fellow workers during her 30 years of service and was characterized by one of them as a “walking reference source.” She knew everyone who lived in the county and who had occasion to visit the Assessors Office.
Those left to mourn are her brother, Lawrence, son Harrison Means, daughter Sue (Means) Kingery with her husband, Dennis, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Opal Cook, her son Ronald, and her husband.
