Ellen Cain

April 8, 1912 — August 5, 2010

Ellen Cain, daughter of Nellie and Thomas Benton Cain, was born April 8, 1912 on a farm south of Corning, and passed away August 5, 2010. She was 98 years, 3 months and 28 days old. Ellen lived on a farm north of Brooks where her family moved when she was three years old. She received her early education in Brooks and graduated from Corning High School in 1929. Ellen was then employed for one year at Parker’s Jewelry Store in Corning. The following year she was old enough to begin her teaching career in a rural school. She was also a Primary Supervisor in Sioux City for one year. She attended college in Creston, Cedar Falls and at Northwest Missouri State College. In 1977 Ellen retired from the Corning School District after teaching forty-five years. She greatly enjoyed her students and her career. While teaching, Ellen was a devoted member of ISEA and NEA and a charter member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, serving as chapter treasurer for twenty years.
At an early age Ellen became a member of the Brooks Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school classes and served as Sunday School Superintendent. Ellen enjoyed her flowers and frequently provided arrangements for Church. She also enjoyed taking trips to visit family and friends. After retirement Ellen did volunteer work for the Rose Ann Auxiliary and served on the Review Committee at Country Haven.
Ellen was preceded in death be her parents; her sister, Sarah; her brothers: Burton and Benton; fiancé’, Leon Moad; and a great-great niece, Olivia Ann Zervos.
Left to treasure the warm memories of her life are four nieces, Joyce Parrish and Ned of Des Moines; Janet Liska and Fred of NC; Margaret Loucks and John of Geneseo, IL; Karen Neece and Chuck of Redwood Falls, MN; and one nephew, Tom Cain, and Rick Butkovich of Brooks; ten great and nine great-great nieces and nephews; relatives and friends.
