Frederick Abell

Frederick “Fred” Earl Abell, 82, of Cromwell, IA died Monday, February 28, 2022, at his home.
Celebration of life services will be Friday, March 4, 2022 at 2:30 PM at the Cromwell Congregational United Church of Christ. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, prior to the service. Rev. Mary O’Riley will officiate. Private burial at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Cromwell will be at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Maple Hill Cemetery or Cromwell Congregational United Church of Christ. Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.pearsonfuneralhomes.com.

Fred was the son of Charles Herbert Abell and Jessie Elizabeth (Dorsey) Abell, born September 17, 1939 in Iowa City, IA. He attended school in Creston, Cromwell and country schools. He graduated with the last Cromwell High School class of 1961.

On June 7, 1963, Fred was united in marriage to Sharon Schrodt at the Cromwell Congregational United Church of Christ. Fred then became a member of the church.

Family was very important to Fred. Their family started with the adoption of Scott in 1968 and then the birth of Ann in 1989. Fred and Sharon were foster parents and provided care for nieces and nephews throughout the years. He attended all activities of his children and grandchildren and loved watching them grow. His grandchildren were the light of his life and he enjoyed every second spent with them.

He worked for Purolator Products, Inc. from 1963 until 1977 in Creston, IA, Rahway, NJ, Ringtown, PA and Fayetteville, NC. After returning to Cromwell, he worked as a farm hand for Louis and Sharon Bennett. He then went on to work for Vanmark Corporation until retiring fully in 2008 with his wife.

Fred is survived by his wife, Sharon Abell of Cromwell; son, Scott (wife Mendy) Abell of Cromwell and their children Garrett Abell and Ericka (husband Alex) Tamerius; daughter, Ann (husband Michael) Bishop of Cromwell and their daughters Alana Bishop, Jessie Bishop, Michelle Bishop and Trinity Michaelis; one brother, Steve Abell of Creston, IA; four sisters-in-law: Mary Lou Abell of Creston, IA, Phyllis Abell of Castle Rock, CO and Nancy Abell, Orient, IA, Cindy (husband Mike) Potts of Creston, IA; Foster son, Rick (wife Teresa) Harrison, Red Oak, IA many nieces, nephews and other extended family.

Fred was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Laura Abell and Jesse and Bessie Dorsey; his parents, Charles Herbert Abell and Jessie Elizabeth (Dorsey) Abell; four brothers: Jackie Abell, Joe Abell, James Abell and Rod Abell; sister-in-law, Irene Abell; parents-in-law Drexel and Lucille Schrodt; and nephew, Michael Abell; neice, Penny Abell Hensen and Elizabeth Abell Lewis.
