Gretha Pembrook

November 24, 1906 — May 25, 2006

Gretha Arline Pembrook, the daughter of Anna Emelia (Hangman) and Nelson Alfred “Fred” Gilbertson was born on November 24, 1906 at New Castle, Nebraska. Gretha entered eternal rest on Thursday, November 25, 2006 at Corning Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of ninety-nine years, six months and two days.
Gretha graduated from Sioux City Central High School, received her bachelors degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa and did post-graduate work at Sioux Citys Morningside College. She married Eugene C. Pembrook in LeMars, Iowa in 1928.
She taught school in Corning, Iowa and at the South Sioux City High School, retiring in 1972. She was active in the Sioux City Educators Unit, the American Association of University Women, the Sioux City Womans Club, the Salvation Army Auxiliary, the Gospel Mission Auxiliary, and the Siouxland Senior Center.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Nevius (husband John) of Corning, Iowa; special friend and dance partner, Wendell Shouse of Sioux City; a sister, Crystal (Mrs. Quentin) Nelson, of Portland, Oregon; three grandchildren, Jack, Joan and Jeff Nevius; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Earle Scott; a brother, William E. Gilbertson; and a sister, Unell (Mrs. Bertrand) Stolpe.
Mrs. Pembrook requested that no memorial service or visitation be held. Her body was bequeathed to the Anatomical Department of the University of Iowa Medical School, Iowa City, Iowa. The Coen-Beaty-Pearson Family Funeral Service of Corning was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials will be directed to the Siouxland Senior Center.
