Harold L. Williams

Burial will be at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Mt. Etna, rural Adams County, with Military Honors provided by OURCQ Post #117, Corning American Legion.
Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association and/or Mt. Etna Church of the Brethren.
Harold LeRoy Williams, son of Selby and Tressie (Yarrington) Williams, was born on December 1, 1916 in Adair County on a farm near Bridgewater, Iowa. Harold entered eternal rest on Monday, January 5, 2009 at the Corning Nursing Rehab Center at the age of ninety-two years, one month and four days.
Harold attended rural schools in Adams and Adair County and Corning High School.
In his young adult life, Harold worked in coal mines near Carbon, Iowa and on farms. In 1941, Harold was drafted into the Army. On May 6th, 1942, while home on furlough, he married Virgene Davis in Maryville, Missouri. She returned with him to Oregon where they lived for a year and a half in Pendleton and Boardman. He was sent overseas to serve in the 8th and 9th Air Force during WWII. He served in the European Theater and was in England, France and Germany where Harold was awarded two Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. While overseas, a daughter, Janis was born in 1943. On August 31, 1945 Corporal Williams was honorably discharged and returned to the United States.
Harold and Virgene started farming in 1946 in Adams County, Iowa. Virgene taught school. A son, Gary was born in 1947.
In 1963 he was appointed substitute rural mail carrier and later became a regular carrier on RR3 Corning. He retired after 25 years of service.
In 2008, Harold and Virgene celebrated 66 wonderful years of marriage. The couple enjoyed traveling and relaxing fishing trips.
Harold is survived by his wife, Virgene of Corning, Iowa; children: Janis (husband Charles) Wessel of Corning, Iowa, Gary (wife Jeri) Williams of Kingman, Arizona; three grandchildren: Jeff (wife Shelly) Williams of Merriam, Kansas, Tracey (wife Mary) Williams of Waterloo, Iowa, Justin (wife Sarah) Williams of San Antonio, Texas; several step-grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren.
Preceding Harold in death were his parents, a twin sister who died in infancy and two grandchildren.
