Howard Dean Long

March 29, 1924 — August 22, 2013

Howard Dean Long, the son of Roger Arthur and Abbie Violet (Lyon) Long, was born on March 29, 1924, in Creston, Iowa. He entered eternal rest on August 22, 2013 at the Afton Care Center, at the age of eighty-nine years.
He lived his entire life in Union County, just a few miles from Creston. He was a graduate of Creston High School and attended junior college in Creston. On July 29, 1956 he married Phyllis C. Schrodt at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Howard began farming with his father. After his father’s death, he continued working the family farm for the next 57 years. In 1976 his farm was recognized by the Iowa Department of Agriculture as a “Century Farm”. In his youth he lived only a quarter of a mile away from this farm. For several years he sold DeKalb seed corn. In 1987 he received a merit award for outstanding accomplishments in resource conservation. He also served as Commissioner for Union County Soil and Water Conservation District.
He was a life-long member of the United Church of Christ (Congregational). He was active in the church, served as Treasurer for many years and held various other offices.
Those remembering Howard’s life are his daughter, Pamela L. Jones, Creston; two grandchildren: Elizabeth A. Jones, Berkeley, CA; and Chelsea R. Jones, Pullman, WA; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Long in 2011; his son, Stephen Long; his granddaughter, Cory Jones; his sister, Winifred Burdette; and his brother, Raymond Long.
