Howard J. Townsend

Howard James Townsend, son of Andrew Jackson Townsend and Carrie (Schow) Townsend was born October 30, 1917 in St. Paul, Nebraska. Howard entered eternal rest on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at Corning Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of eighty-eight years, nine months and seventeen days.
He grew up and worked on his parents farm, along with three brothers and one sister. At the age of 21, Howard went to work for Howard County, Nebraska road maintenance operating heavy road equipment. He attended an Electrical School in Chicago. He joined the United States Air Force in January of 1942, a member of the 32nd Bomber Squadron, 301st Bomb Group, in September of 1942 the group began spending time in England, North Africa and Italy. In April of 1945, he returned to the United States on a 45 day leave and was discharged in June of 1945.
Howard married a long time friend Faye Marrs on May 22, 1945 at Tingely, Iowa. They farmed near Mt. Ayr until February of 1956 when they bought a farm east of Corning, Iowa. On January 3, 1984. a farm auction was held and Howard and Faye retired and moved to Corning.
He was a life time member of church and attended regularly. He was a member of the American Legion Ourcq Post #117, Corning, Iowa.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife: Faye Townsend of Corning; son: Rex Townsend and wife Judy of Corning; daughter: Carmen Young and husband Larry of Story City, Iowa; 6 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; Brothers: Darold Townsend and wife Ellamae of St. Paul, Nebraska; Warren Townsend and wife Margie of St. Paul, Nebraska; also his sisters-in-law, Betty Fenn, of Carson, Iowa and Naomi Marrs of Lincoln, Nebraska and a number of nieces, nephews and many friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Evelyn Rasmussen; and brother, Marvin Townsend.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association.
