Jo Powe, 86, of Creston died October 7, 2012, at Greater Regional Hospice Home, Creston, Iowa. Memorial Services will be 3:00 P.M., Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at the First Christian Church, Creston, Iowa. Pastor Diana Clark will officiate. Inurnment will be at the Greenfield Cemetery, Greenfield, Iowa. There will be no public viewing. Family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:30 P.M. on Wednesday at the First Christian Church prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church. Mary Joann “Jo” Powe, the daughter of Leonard C. and Maude W. (Houston) Valentine, was born on March 12, 1926 in Greenfield, Iowa. Jo graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines with the Class of 1944. On June 22, 1946, she married Rodney Milton Powe in Des Moines. After they were married, she helped her husband at Office Machines in Creston. After retirement, Jo and Rod owned and operated an ice cream shop in Kansas City, Bresslers 33 Flavors, in Oak Park Mall, Overland Park, Kansas. Jo lived in Arizona from 1984-2005.
Jo was a member of the Crestmoor Golf Club and the Fountain of the Sun Community in Mesa, Arizona for many years and had the pleasure of getting a “Hole In One”. She belonged to several bowling leagues and several different Bridge Clubs. Playing cards at the golf club every Wednesday was a very special time for her. Jo also loved to go boating. Jo was a long-time member of the First Christian Church in Creston. Jo’s family was very important to her and she loved all of her children and grandchildren.
Left to cherish Jo’s memory are her children: Kathy (Bob) Marshall, Olathe, Kansas, Nancy (Bill) Colwell, Hudson, Iowa; and Greg (Wanda) Powe, Las Cruces, New Mexico; Six grandchildren: Lisa (Russ) Everhart, Overland Park, Kansas; Britt McDonald, Overland Park, Kansas; Devon (Regina) McDonald, Shawnee, Kansas; Blake Colwell (and special friend, Erin Harms), Cedar Falls, Iowa; Shelby Colwell (and special friend, Luke McNeese), Cedar Rapids; and David Powe, Houston, Texas; Eight great-grandchildren: Briley and Haven Everhart; Mia and Josie McDonald; Evian, Kendal, Shelby and Hailee Powe; her nephews: John (Davia) Hobbs and daughter Addie, Davenport, Iowa; Michael Valentine; and Dean Valentine; her nieces: Lyndsey Loyet, Des Moines and daughter MacKenzie Loyet, Columbus, Indiana; and Leigh Valentine.
Preceding Jo in death were her parents, her husband, Rod, of forty-eight years in 1994; her brothers: James and Robert Valentine; her sister: Virginia Loyet; and two nephews: Kevin Loyet and Mike Hobbs.
