Leo W. Schaffer

Burial will be at the East Fairview Cemetery in Lenox with Military Honors from the Corning American Legion OURCQ Post #0117.

Leo William “Red” Schaffer, son of William Frank and Alta Almeda (Nash) Schaffer, was born on August 10, 1917 in Taylor County near Lenox, Iowa. Leo entered eternal rest on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at the Corning Nursing and Rehab Center in Corning, Iowa at the age of ninety-two years, three months and four days.
Leo entered the United States Army on March 27, 1941 in Ft. Riley, Kansas, serving during WWII as a Tech 5. Leo earned the Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged from Pine Camp, New York on November 16, 1945.
Leo resided in Corning over twenty-five years. He also lived in Creston for a number of years working at Wellman Dynamics as a Shaker. Prior to working at Wellmans, Leo worked for the Prescott Elevator more than twenty years. Leo retired from Wellman Dynamics at the age of eighty-three.
Leo was a lifetime member of the Prescott American Legion Post #0544.
Leos entire life consisted of working hard. He was a very simple, humble and modest man. Leo loved taking drives throughout the countryside. He prided himself in knowing everyones names and where they lived. He enjoyed watching the Lawrence Welk Show. He cherished time spent with his nieces and nephews. Leo nicknamed all of the little girls in the family as “Dollys” and the little boys ” Tuffys”. He had a wonderful sense of humor and will be missed by all.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Sherry L. (Ron) Thomson of Jackson, TN; three grandchildren: Sheron Kirk of Jackson, TN, Cathy (Joseph) Lorino of Shawnee, KS, Rebecca (Brandon) Scheidecker of Jackson, TN; eight great-grandchildren: Trevor, Travis and Alexandra Kirk; Gabriella, Dominic, Nicholas and Cecelia Lorino; and Braden Scheidecker; sister, Almeda Eggleston of Corning; sister-in-law, Lottie Schaffer of Corning; niece, Carolyn (Dennis) Stormer of Corning and their children: David (Betsy) Stormer, Dylan Stormer, Denise (Thomas) Puffer and Carrie Stormer; nephew: Jim (Cathy) Eggleston of Prescott, IA and their children; Mason (Julie) Eggleston, Allie Eggleston and Melissa (Justin Hendrikson) Eggleston and other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Leo was proceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Kenneth, Orville, Deryl, Harry and Laverne Schaffer; one sister, Velda Hardisty.
