Lois Evelyn Young

January 20, 1917 — March 19, 2011

Lois Evelyn (Roberts) Young, daughter of Jesse Elwell and Mabel Linda (Probst) Roberts, was born on January 20, 1917 on a farm in Washington Township, Mt. Etna, Iowa. Lois passed away at the Vintage Park Apartments on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the age of ninety-four years, one month and twenty-seven days.
Lois attended country school and graduated from Corning High School with the Class of 1933. Following graduation, Lois was united in marriage to the love of her life, Harold “Tobe” Costin Young on July 27, 1933. Two sons were born to bless this union: Ronald Glen and Rex Allen.
The young couple spent the first five years of their marriage on a farm three miles east of Corning where their first son was born. After a brief venture in operating a convenience store and filling station at Dickieville, the couple moved to Corning where their second son was born.
Lois was extremely active in the community. She served as Secretary for the Chamber of Commerce for several years and was Deputy Auditor of Adams County for ten years. Lois served as Clerk for the Adams County Recorder and Treasurers offices as well.
As Harolds trucking business increased, she retired from the courthouse and devoted all of her time as a bookkeeper and truck dispatcher to Young Transfer.
As a result of Harolds failing health, the couple sold the business and retired in December 1974. They loved to travel and spent many winters in Florida. Harold and Lois spent their entire married life in Adams County.
Lois was baptized at the Mt. Etna Methodist Church. She taught 4th, 7th and 8th grade Sunday School and Bible School at the Corning Methodist Church where she had been a member and Circle Leader since 1929.
As busy as Lois was professionally, she always found the time to volunteer and lend support for what she believed in. Lois volunteered for many years at the House of History and was a Lifetime Member of the Rose Ann Auxiliary. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
