Lois Scott

July 12, 1916 — September 5, 2008

Private Graveside Service.
Lois Laughlin Scott of Dallas Center, Iowa, was born on July 12, 1916, to John and Maude (Krum) Laughlin in Spokane, Washington, and entered into rest on September 5, 2008, at the Taylor House in Des Moines at the age of ninety-two years, one month and twenty-five days.
She was the only child of her parents to be born in a hospital because she was born feet first, and she always landed on her feet throughout her lifetime. Her parents lived in a log cabin built by her father during her childhood. Lois enjoyed talking about living in the hills and trapping and shooting squirrels, nailing the tails on the side of the shed and her Dad paying her one cent for each tail. She never knew what he did with those tails.
Lois was the second child of four children who all attended a rural school near Newman Lake, Washington. This school had all eight grades in one room with one teacher. She graduated from Otis Orchard High School and the Spokane School of Cosmetology.
On December 11, 1936, she married Hawley Scott in Coeur dAlene, Idaho. They left immediately for Adams County, Iowa, where Hawley was a descendant of Gideon Farris who settled in Adams County in 1851. Four children were born to Lois and Hawley: Karen, Dolores, Linda, and Richard.
While her children were home, Lois spent her life as a homemaker and an active member of the Church of the Brethren.
Lois lived a full life and enjoyed traveling to Europe and the Scandinavian countries. She also enjoyed reading, doing genealogy and her crafts. In her retirement years she enjoyed the social life and the care she received while living at Spurgeon Manor, Dallas Center, Iowa.
Lois is the last surviving member of her family of four and is survived by her children: Karen (Paul) Underhill of Ankeny, Iowa, Dolores McIntire of Creston, Iowa; Linda Lange of St. Louis, Missouri; and Richard (Debbie) Scott of Clinton, Iowa; Twelve Grandchildren and several Great-Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters: Peggy Cunningham and Nancy Strong; her brother, John Laughlin; her husband, Hawley, in 1971; her son-in-law, Galyn McIntire in 2008 and her brother-in-law, George Cunningham.
Memorials may be directed to the family as a memorial to Spurgeon Manor.
