Loretta Wetzel

Loretta Sue (Lawrence) Wetzel was born November 28, 1950 to Virgil Leo and Sybil Lorraine (Proffitt) Lawrence in Maryville, Missouri. Loretta grew up on a farm South of Bedford, Iowa where she attended country school and later graduated from Bedford High School in 1969. She then graduated from The American Institute of Business (AIB) of Des Moines in 1970.
On September 12, 1970 she was united in marriage to Robert Wetzel and to this union was blessed with three children: Christina Lynn, Jason Charles and Nicholas James. Robert and Loretta raised their three children on a farm south of Corning. Together in 2010, they were able to build their dream home which is where Robert still resides.
Beginning in 1974, Loretta worked at National Farmers Organization for 16 years in Corning. When NFO closed she took a job at Red Star Mills in 1990, working in the office. For the past 19 years, Loretta was the office manager at the Corning Municipal Utilities.
All throughout her youth, she was an active participant of the Loyal Legion 4-H club in Taylor County. She instilled the importance of 4-H into her three children. After her three children graduated high school, Loretta volunteered countless years for the Adams County 4-H and Youth Fair Committee. Loretta also enjoyed reading numerous books since she was a child. She could often be found sitting on the deck of her new house enjoying the summer day while reading a book and watching Rob farm and taking care of his cattle. She also enjoyed cooking for her family and spending time with her grandchildren.
After a lengthy battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, Loretta passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Select Specialty Hospital in Omaha with her family by her side.
She was preceded in death by her parents, father-in-law Cleo Wetzel and brother-in-law Ron Wetzel.
Left to cherish Loretta’s memory are her husband, Robert Wetzel of Corning; children: Christina (Charlie) Simmons, Jake, Jared, Chase and Lea of Unionville, MO; Jason (Lindsay) Wetzel, Gavin and Griffin of Corning; Nick (Allie) Wetzel of Clarinda; brother, Donald (Jennie) Mozier of St. Joseph, MO; sister Lorraine (Gary) Crecelius of Ankeny, IA; brother-in-law, Dwight(Glenda) Wetzel of Bedford, IA; sister-in-law Marcia (Galen) Nickell of Gravity, IA and mother-in-law Dorothy (Hays) Wetzel of Clearfield, IA formerly of Gravity, IA; along with many nieces and nephews.
