Interment will at 10:00 A.M.,on Thursday, May 14, at the Prairie Rose Cemetery south of Corning in Adams County prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the Corning Public Library and/or the Iowa 4-H Foundation.
Thelma Lucille Thomas was born May 28, 1915, to Henry and Genevieve (Jennie Starks) Mitchell in their Taylor County farm, north of Fairview Church. She passed away on May 10, 2009, at the Hillcrest Care Center in Laurel, Nebraska.
Lucille attended Fairview rural school in Taylor County and graduated from Corning High School in 1933. She attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where she was a member of Delta, Delta, Delta. Lucille taught at a country school for 1 year.
She married John Milliken Thomas on October 16, 1936. Three daughters were born to bless this union; Alice Rae; Carolyn Kaye; and Anne Marie. Lucille was proud to be able to donate a kidney to her daughter, Alice in 1974.
Lucille was a homemaker and a 4-H leader for many years. She loved her vegetable and flower gardens, family, and traveling. She enjoyed sewing and was proud she was able to make a “graduation quilt” for each of her grandchildren. Family get-togethers were important to her, with women bonding in the kitchen; and everyone playing games later.
She was a member of the Fairview Church, Past Matrons Club, and PEO. She organized church youth activities, taught Sunday school, and enjoyed Ladies Aid. Lucille recently received her 50-year Eastern Star membership pin.
Lucille is survived by daughters Carolyn (Jack) Harvey of Plainwell, Michigan and Anne (Ken) Nolte of Wayne, Nebraska; and son-in-law Alan MacDougall of San Diego, California.
Grandchildren are: Deb (Todd) Swanson, Jan (Gregory) Harvey-Smith, Lori (David) Harvey-Johnston, Steve Harvey, Mark (Celeste) Harvey, Shawn Nolte, Traci (Johnny) Jeffrey, Scott (Rosie) MacDougall, and Laura (Colin) Crozier. She is survived by 7 Great-grandchildren: Emma and Tyler Swanson, Clarissa and Andrew Johnston, Lucy and Perle Harvey-Smith, and Veronica Harvey.
Other survivors include her sister, Ruth Goldsmith, and sister-in-law Ruth Thomas, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents; husband, John, in 1969; daughter, Alice Rae, in 1997; brother, Warren Mitchell; sister-in-law, Lois Mitchell; and brothers-in-law: Earl Goldsmith and Russell Thomas.
