Mamie Ramsbottom

Mamie Lucile Ramsbottom, the daughter of Amos “Roy” Leroy Parker and Mabel Margaret (Garrison) Parker, was born on July 6, 1922 in Creston, Iowa. Mamie entered eternal rest on April 11, 2015 at Prairie Estates Nursing Home, Frisco, Texas at the age of ninety-two years, nine months, and five days.
Mamie attended school in Creston, Iowa and graduated from Creston High School in May 1941. Mamie married Frank Lavern Ramsbottom on May 20, 1941 in Grant City, Missouri. Two children were born to bless this marriage: Jean Phyllis and Barbara Kay Ramsbottom.
Mamie and Frank lived in Lorain, Ohio where Mamie operated a diner; and later at St. Louis, Missouri she owned a delicatessen. After she sold the delicatessen, she helped Frank in his TV Sales and Service business. In 1955, they moved to Kirksville where Mamie owned and operated Mamie’s Big Value HyKlas Grocery Store from 1965-1970; and in 1970 Mamie’s Fashions And Style Shop. She owned Parker Publications (which was a part of Ramsbottom Printing) and published The Kirksville Area Shopper (the first free advertising paper in Kirksville, Missouri). Her last business was the Craft Center in Harlingen, Texas and Mamie retired in 1990.
Frank was a licensed instrument flight instructor at the Kirksville FAA Flight Service Station and he taught Mamie to fly. She was a member of the 99 Club founded by Amelia Earhart. Mamie was the first woman Assistant State Director of the Texas Good Sam Club.
Mamie lovingly cared for Frank Ramsbottom until he passed away in 1998. She then left Texas for a while to care for her youngest daughter Barbara in her fight with cancer. Barbara passed away July 5, 1999. After that time Mamie continued to participate with the Good Sam Club and she would go on day trips on her own in the RV. She learned how to golf and could be found at the range weekly practicing her swing. On June 2, 2001, her eldest daughter Jean lost her fight with cancer.
Shortly after, Mamie moved up to Clear Lake, Texas where she started a new chapter of her life. She became an active member in TOPS, and she obtained her KOPS (weight goal) status in 2002. She took many local trips and trips abroad with friends at the Senior Center. She decided to learn more about formal dancing (she was always a great square dancer). She also continued to bowl in the Sr. Bowling league. A year later she joined happy hikers so she could get in more walking (the mall was too boring). In 2005, Mamie was hospitalized and had major surgery. The Dr.’s prognosis was that she would not be able to care for herself any longer. She took that as a challenge and within one year she was walking and driving once again. In 2006, she moved in with her Granddaughter Gloria Pechacek and Son-In Law Joe Pechacek to North Dallas Texas (Little Elm, TX). Mamie once again took her change in environment as a challenge. She joined the Senior Center in Frisco, TX, where she continued to go on trips. She became an active member in TOPS and continued to study formal dancing and enjoyed going out dancing with her friends. Mamie joined First Baptist Church Frisco on January 3, 2010. She also continued bowling with her new bowling league in Lewisville, TX. A pinnacle for Mamie was visiting Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon for her 90th birthday where she could fly in a helicopter and walk on the Sky Bridge overlooking the Grand Canyon.
Left to cherish Mamie’s memory are her Grandchildren: Laura (Lowell) Lane, Carthage, MO; John (Tammy) Conklin, Carbondale, KS; Gloria (Joe) Pechacek, Little Elm, TX; and Brent Hall (Fiance’ Jennifer), Topeka, KS; Her Great-Grandchildren: Shawn (Lindsay) Conklin, Osage City, KS; Brett (Sarah) Conklin, Carbondale, KS; Matthew, Michael, Emily, and Amy Lane, Carthage, MO; Moira and Davin Pechacek, Little Elm, TX; and Shyanne Hall, Topeka, KS; Her Great-Great Grandchildren: Brayden and Hunter Conklin, Carbondale, KS; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Preceding Mamie in death were her parents: Roy and Mabel Parker; her husband: Frank Ramsbottom in 1998; her two daughters: Barbara Hall; and Jean Ramsbottom; her brother: Amos Parker, Jr.; and her sister: Theodora “Tootie” Johanna Rhoads.
