Marilyn Elaine Barnard

October 26, 1936 — November 12, 2010

Marilyn (Odson) Barnard, daughter of Elmo Edward and Evelyn Genevieve (Peterson) Odson, was born on Monday, October 26, 1936 at her grandparent’s home in Adams County. Marilyn entered eternal rest on Friday, November 12, 2010 at the Corning Nursing Rehab Center in Corning, Iowa at the age of seventy-four years and seventeen days.
Marilyn was raised on a farm northwest of Dickieville where she attended country school until the fourth grade. She then attended school in Nodaway and graduated with the Class of 1954. After high school Marilyn spent the next two years at Clarinda Junior College obtaining her Associates Degree. Marilyn then pursued her nursing career by attending Missouri Methodist School of Nursing and became a graduate nurse in 1959. Marilyn became employed by St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri where she met the love of her life, Jerry Lee Barnard.
The couple was united in marriage on June 5, 1960 at a Baptist Church in Kansas City. Two children were born to bless this union: Tanya Marie and Darren Lee. In 1966 the young family moved to Adams County, Iowa and lived for eighteen years in Douglas Township. Marilyn began her long-time career at Rosary Hospital in 1966, was appointed Director of Nursing in 1979, later becoming the Operations Director of Patient Care Services prior to retiring in 2003 with over thirty-five years of dedication. Marilyn and Jerry celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past June.
Marilyn was a member of the Red Hat Ladies, Rose Ann Auxiliary, Strand Ladies Aide and the Strand Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Marilyn enjoyed quilting, baking and bible study.
Left to cherish Marilyn’s memory is her husband, Jerry Barnard of Corning; daughter, Tanya Barnard of Lamoni, Iowa; son, Darren (wife Jeanette) Barnard of Kansas City, Missouri; granddaughter, Jacqueline Barnard; great-grandson, Tyler and sister, Janice Phillis.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Elmo and Evelyn Odson.
