Mary Ann Johnson

Mary Ann Johnson, the daughter of Joseph Tolbert and Julia Anne (Waters) Maeder, was born on March 28, 1927 in Victoria Township, Cass County, Iowa. Mary Ann entered eternal rest on June 6, 2017, at Greater Regional Medical Center, Creston, Iowa, at the age of ninety years, two months, and nine days.
Mary Ann attended Country School in Adair County, Washington #2, and graduated from Richland High School. On January 16, 1947, she married Richard Leroy Johnson under a tree at the Adair County Courthouse in Greenfield, Iowa. Mary Ann was a farm wife and homemaker all of her adult life. She farmed with her husband in Lincoln Township, Union County, Iowa, and moved to town in the early 2000’s. Mary Ann has resided at Homestead the last four years.
While in Greenfield Mary Ann was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and later transferred her membership to Holy Spirit Catholic Church. She was active on the Council of Catholic Women and served on the funeral luncheon committee. She was also a member of O.D.O. Neighborhood Club and volunteered for GRMC Auxilliary for several years. Mary Ann always tended a large vegetable garden and strawberry patch and was a huge sports fan, especially the Chicago Bulls and Iowa State Cyclones.
Left to cherish Mary Ann’s memory are her sons: David R. Johnson, Creston; Harold D. (Pam) Johnson, St. Louis, MO; and Paul L. (Ann) Johnson, Creston; her daughter-in-law, Amy Patterson, Orient; Six Grandsons: Matthew, Andy, Patrick, Clayton, Chad, and Sam Johnson; Three Granddaughters: Betsy Gale, Hanna Hayes, and Emma Johnson; Four Great-Grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Mabel Cook, Salem, OR; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Preceding Mary in death were her parents; her husband in 1997; her son: Russell Johnson; four brothers: Jack, Burt, Earl and Vern Maeder; three sisters: Alice Lents, Bertha Kembery, and Ilene Maeder; and an infant grandson, Seth Johnson.
