Mary Baird, 93, of Creston, died Sunday, January 20, 2013, at Crest Haven Care Centre, Creston, IA. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M., Thursday, January 24, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Father Kenneth Halbur, Jr. will officiate. Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Creston. Open Visitation will be from 1:00 – 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 23, at Pearson Family Funeral Service, 809 W. Montgomery St., Creston. A Christian Wake Service will be 6:00 P.M. Wednesday and family will greet friends from 6:30 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s name. Mary Kathryn Baird, the daughter of Patrick Henry and Catherine Gertrude (Howe) Hannan, was born on June 2, 1919, in Creston, Iowa. Mary attended school in Creston and graduated from Creston High School. In 1944, Mary married Charles Frederick Baird in Tyler, Texas, and together they raised five children. Following World War II, Charles and Mary made their home in Creston and lived in Creston over fifty years. Charles passed away in 1986.
Mary worked as a Beautician in Creston for many years in several different beauty shops. She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, and the Council of Catholic Women. Mary was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary; Lady Elks; and several bridge clubs. Mary volunteered many hours of her time as a Hospice volunteer.
Left to cherish Mary’s memory are her daughter: Kathleen Jones, Canton, MI; her sons: Fred Baird, Newton, IA; Bill Baird, Angier, NC; Tom Baird (and significant other, Brenda Scadden), Creston, IA; and Steve Baird, Creston, IA; eight Grandchildren; several Great-Grandchildren; one Great-Great-Granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding Mary in death were her parents; her husband, Charles; and her two brothers, Thomas and Patrick Hannan.
