Mary Jane Buckmiller was born in Atchison, Kansas, and was the third daughter of Albert and Hattie Dowse. At the age of thirteen, the family moved to Wyoming to work. After a short stay in Wyoming, they moved to Creston, Iowa, where Albert went to work for Walter Scotts dad. Albert was good with horses so that is why he got the job.

After five years of marriage, they bought the farm which is now known as the Buckmiller farm. To this union was born one son, Eugene Arthur. Through the years, she was blessed with four granddaughters that kept her on her toes.
