Mary Catherine Kennedy Young was born on May 5, 1921 in rural Adams County, the daughter of James P. and Berenice (Cullen) Kennedy. Mary Catherine died on January 1, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Corning, Iowa at the age of 88 years and 8 months.
Mary Catherine attended Jasper #4 grade school in rural Adams County and graduated from Corning High School with the class of 1939. On April 21, 1947 Harold Leighton Young and Mary Catherine were united in marriage at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Corning. After their marriage they lived and farmed north of Prescott until their retirement in 1996, when they moved to Corning.
Three children were born to this union: Douglas Richard (Deborah) of Snoqualmie, Washington; Ronald Eugene of Sacramento, California; and Catherine Ann (friend, Kathy Keifer) of North Liberty, Iowa.
In addition to being a homemaker, Mary Catherine worked outside of the home at the national headquarters of the National Farmers Organization and as an office assistant at the Corning office of the Farmers Home Administration. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, collecting Candlewick dishes, quilting, genealogy exploration, and volunteering. She was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church, St. Patricks Alter Society, the Rose Ann Auxiliary and the Adams County Genealogy Society. Harold and Mary Catherine were proud supporters of the 21st Century Health Care Campaign for Mercy Hospital and the Mercy Health Care Foundation.
Preceding Mary Catherine in death were her husband, Harold, her parents, her brother James C. Kennedy, her nephew Mark Kennedy, and her brother-in-law Billy Cooper.
Mary Catherine is survived by her children, four grand children: Christopher Young and his wife Michele; Brandon Young and his wife Sandi; Rosemary and April Young; two great-grand-daughters: Noelle and Lauren Young; one sister: Dorothy Beard; four brothers: Bernard and his wife Marjorie, Louis and his wife Kay, Edward and his wife Carla, and Richard and his wife Carol; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Mary Catherine is also survived by her devoted companion and source of happiness, Rosie her cat.
