Mary Josephine Cihak, the daughter of James Vincent and Josephine Mary (Deholien) Cihak, was born on January 3, 1923 in Creston, Iowa. Mary Josephine entered eternal rest on October 11, 2013 at Creston Nursing and Rehab. in Creston, Iowa at the age of ninety years, nine months, and eight days.
Mary Josephine graduated from Creston High School with the Class of 1940. She received her Bachelor Degree from the University of Iowa in 1945; and she received her Master’s Degree from the University of Southern California in 1951. Mary Josephine taught school in Bakersfield, California before moving to Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1969. She worked for the Council Bluffs School system as a reading specialist for eleven years, retiring in 1980. Mary Josephine taught both public and parochial school in Creston and various other places.
Mary Josephine was a past member of the American Association of Women; Kappa Kappa Iota Educational Sorority; and the Iowa Retired Teachers Association.
Left to cherish Mary Josephine’s memory is her brother, James Cihak, Creston; her nephews: Mike (Joy) Cihak, Afton, IA; and Greg Cihak, Indianola, IA; and her niece, Julie Cihak and husband Mark Cullen, West Des Moines, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister-in-law, Verlee Cihak.
