Mary Margaret Lenz, daughter of Anna Isabel (Curry) and Lewis Bernard Mack, was born on November 19, 1924, in Adams County, Corning, Iowa. Mary passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at the Hospice House in Smithfield, Pennsylvania at the age of eighty-four years, three months and twenty-two days.
Mary graduated from Corning High School in 1942, Ottumwa Heights College in 1944, and received her Bachelor of Science degree from University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1970. One of Marys fondest school memories was marching as a member of the high school band which won first place in national competition.
On December 30, 1950, Mary was united in marriage to John Francis Lenz at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Corning and two children were born to bless this union, Mary Bernadette and Charles John.
Mary worked in the family hardware stores, Curry and Mack and later Mack Hardware and Appliance. Later, she operated Lenz Refinish and Repair. Her career as an educator, in the Corning School District, began in 1946. In 1972, Mary became the junior-senior high school librarian for eighteen years, retiring in 1990.
Mary was always active and involved in her communities. She was Girl Scout leader and Junior Catholic Daughter sponsor. She was a member of American Association of University Women, Catholic Daughters of America, Adams County Departmental Clubs, Happy Hollow Country Club Womens Board, Centennial Board, Centennial Pageant, Icarian Players, St. Patricks Church and Alter Society. She served as a board member of Alegent-Mercy Health System, St. Matthews Catholic Church and Monroe County Historical Association in Pennsylvania.
Survivors include her husband, John Lenz of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania; daughter, Mary Bernadette (husband, Christopher B.) Lynch; grandchildren: Joseph Francis, Elizabeth Rose and Andrew John Lynch, all of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania; brother, Lewis Francis Mack of Corning, Iowa; sisters: Joan Haley Mack Gebhardt of Mission, Texas, Mary Jo Lenz (husband, Dr. Aurel) Galipeau of Lakewood, California and Audrey Bannick Lenz Harmening of Lakefield, Minnesota; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Elizabeth Wagner and Charles John Lenz; son, Charles John Lenz; brothers: Robert John Mack, Raphael Henry Paul Mack, and infant brother Joseph William Mack; sisters and brothers-in-law: Patricia Johns Mack, Phyllis Watts Mack, Alberta Lenz Banck, Marcella Lenz Mauch, Mildred Lenz Homan, Charles G. Lenz, Elmer Lenz, Frank Banck, Leonard Mauch and Loyal Homan.
