Nancy Bauman

‘Tis sad we are to share that Nancy Jane (Knight) Bauman slipped quietly from this life at the end of a long story on June 30, 2016 at age 93 surrounded by her children.
Nancy is survived by son Michael Thomas of Des Moines, Iowa and several step children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; daughter Mary Hovelson and her husband Eric of Clive, Iowa; son Norman Thomas and his wife Melody of Yale, Iowa and four step-granddaughters and four great grandchildren; granddaughter Emily Hovelson of Coralville, Iowa; grandson Nick Howard and his wife Danielle, and five great grandchildren Ariel, Kristen, Nancy, Evelyn and Nicholas Howard of Falcon, Colorado; great grandsons Gavin Holt and Samuel Howard of Princeton, North Carolina; niece Emily Klinkenborg and her husband Doug of Auburn, Alabama; sister-in-law Carolyn Bauman of Centerville, Iowa, and other dear cousins and assorted shirt tail relatives and miscreants . . . .
She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Bauman, her son Samuel Howard, her parents Harvey and Emily Knight, all eight of her siblings, her granddaughter Brooklyn Howard, her daughter-in-law Sharon Thomas and the usual assortment of beloved relatives along with a few ne’er-do-wells and a couple of other husbands.
Nancy was born in Malvern, Iowa on April 10, 1923, and graduated from Malvern High School in 1942. She wanted to become a writer but World War II (she tried to enlist in the WAC’s but they said she was a wee bit too small), marriage and children intervened. She lived in Texas and Colorado before returning briefly to Malvern Iowa in 1959. Then moved to Red Oak, Iowa and finally to Creston in 1963.
Nancy was a lifelong Presbyterian and was active in church activities throughout her life. Most recently, she delighted in writing The Pencil Box, a short column for the First Presbyterian Church’s newsletter. ‘Twas always a surprise to read what she had to say each month! She was a long time member of the VFW Auxiliary and always encouraged others to fly the flag.
Nancy and her husband Harold supported and were active in the Creston Community Playhouse for many years. Harold did the lighting and sound and Nancy did the acting. She and Harold flew around Iowa in their Piper Tri-pacer for numerous delightful years and once, even managed to fly through a rainbow.
