Nettie Cordell

October 3, 1914 — January 16, 2006

Nettie Faith Evans was born on Saturday, October 3, 1914, on a farm near Gravity in Washington Township to Benjamin Franklin and Sarah Ann (Briggs) Evans. She was the tenth of their eleven children.
Her school days were spent in Taylor County country schools where she was promoted from third grade to sixth grade to be in the same class as other students. High school was not an option for her.
On May 25, 1933, Nettie was united in marriage at the Methodist Church in Maryville, Missouri, to Carl Henry Cordell of the Athelstan area. They continued to live and farm in Taylor County until Carls death.
Five children were born to this union: Henry LaVerne (Butch), Peggy Jane, Donna Rae, Larry Lee, and John Franklin.
Besides being a farm wife with all of the chores of the animals and gardening, raising five children, and being a strong supporter of her husband, Nettie found enough energy to be extremely active in the Sharpsburg Methodist Church. The American Legion Auxiliary, and the Cancer Society. Nettie enjoyed numerous years of serving food in the Lenox rodeo cook shack. She also lived out the command of “love thy neighbor” by transporting neighborhood ladies to town for grocery shopping or doing their shopping for them. Many local citizens will remember her for the rugs she created on her rug loom.
She has been involved in the lives of all of her children and grandchildren, hosting numerous family dinners for holiday occasions. The food supply never seemed to be exhausted.
Preceding Nettie in death were husband Carl in 1989, son John in 1969, grandson Dennis Duane Cordell in 1962, daughter-in-law Joan Cordell in 1964, son-in-law Doyle Gilbert in 1993, son-in-law Harlan Brown in 1999, her parents, and her siblings: Pearle Bugg, Myrtle Fancher, Sylvia Peterman, Dewey Evans, Grace Gibson, Hazel Lister, Dimple Salter, Cash Evans, Crystal Matheny, and Darlene Jay.
She is survived by her children Laverne (wife Faith) Cordell, Peggy Brown, Donna Smithson, Larry (wife Gail) Cordell, grandchildren: Kathy McCall (Jim), Patty Poole, Sharon Dalton (Quentin); Michael Gilbert (Denise), Jackie Schmucker, Julie Gilbert, Christine Neemann, John Gilbert (Sarah), Charlie Smithson (Jennifer), Larry D. Cordell, Jr. (Marti Sue), Leesa Van Gelder (Paul), Leslie Cordell, Dawne Bowman (Mike), 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.
Nettie passed from this life to the next on January 16, 2006, at the age of 91 years, 3 months, and 13 days. Funeral services were conducted on January 19, 2006 by Rev. Tim Maxa at the Coen-Beaty Pearson Family Funeral Service Home with burial in the family plot in West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.
