Orie C. Johnston

Orie Carl Johnston, son of Juanita Simboline (Atha) and Paul LeRoy Johnston was born August 2, 1942 at home in rural Corning, Iowa. Carl entered eternal rest on Wednesday, February 8, 2006 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital, Corning, Iowa at the age of sixty-three years, six months and nine days.
He graduated from Corning High School. On October 16, 1960, he was united in marriage to Sandra Rae Nevius at the Corning United Methodist Church. They were blessed with two daughters, Debbie and Diane.
In Carls earlier years he hauled freight for Vince Sullivan; worked for the Corning Farm Service Coop and the Anderson Miller Oil Company. Carl purchased a Pepsi Cola distributorship and purchased Skelly Oil in 1968. In 1989 he built the Texaco convenience store. Carl worked with CRP Research/Demonstration Project, was a UMYF sponsor, served on PPR board of the United Methodist Church and was a member of Masonic Lodge # 275. He served with the Corning Volunteer Fire Department for nearly 20 years, and was second assistant fire chief. Carl had served on the Adams County Conservation board, Mercy Health Care Foundation Board. He provided transportation for meals on wheels, was an organizer of the Antique Tractor exhibit at the Adams County Fair and was a member of the Antique Hall of Fame. He enjoyed playing santa claus for many area children.
He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Johnston in 1970; brother Stanley Johnston; and father-in-law Harold Nevius and mother-in-law Grace Nevius.
Carl is survived by his wife Sandy Johnston of Corning; mother Juanita Johnston-Cooley of Corning; daughters, Debbie Hogan and husband Jamie of Corning and Diane Payne and husband Gene of Corning; sisters, Ramona Gaskill and husband Ron of Omaha, Nebraska, Violet Hackett and husband Bob of Merrimac, Wisconsin, and Judy Templeton and husband Ivan of Bellevue, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Chesley Hogan and fiance Robert Pangburn, Paul Hogan, Megan Payne and James Hogan, sisters-in-law Patty Johnston of Omaha, Nebraska and Mary Brenton and husband Bill of Anita; brother-in-law Donald Nevius and wife Diane of Osceola, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
