Burial will be at Prairie Rose Cemetery, Adams County.
Memorials may be directed to the Rose Anns Hospital Auxiliary and/or Maple Grove United Methodist Church in Guss.
Osil (Steadman) Mitchell was born December 22, 1920 near Nodaway, Iowa to Kitty (Marsh) Steadman and Orville B. Steadman. She had a younger brother, Byron.
Osil attended rural schools in Taylor County, Iowa and graduated from the Corning High School class of 1938. Osil taught Nodaway Center rural school one year and at Mt. Pleasant School for four years.
During these formative years Osil met the love of her life, Paul Mitchell. Paul and Osil were married May 28, 1942 in Reno, Nevada and remained inseparable until her death.
Paul worked for the Boeing Corporation in Seattle, Washington and then at the Naval Air Station in Alameda, California. Osil joined Paul in Alameda during the summer of 1942. Due to the uncertainty of WWII, Osil returned to Iowa in August, 1942 and resumed teaching. Paul returned to Iowa in January 1943 and was drafted into the Army Air Force a short time later.
Paul was stationed in numerous locations throughout the United States and overseas in Cairo, Egypt. During this period Osil lived with her parents and continued to teach until son Paul Douglas was born November 25, 1944.
Paul and Osil farmed upon Pauls military discharge. Their first farm was the George Bycroft place where Pauls parents and his brother had lived for the previous 16 years. Son Stephen Dale was born September 14, 1955. In 1959 Paul and Osil bought and moved to their farm located near Iveyville, Iowa. In 2008 they moved to a home in Corning, Iowa.
Osil and Paul began attending the Maple Grove Methodist Church at Guss, Iowa, in 1949 and joined it 1951. They remained active members until Osils death. Osil had a great fondness for working with the church youth group as well as with the United Methodist Womens (UMW) organization. Osil was a Bible and Sunday School teacher for many years. She only retired as a Sunday School teacher during the last months of her life.
Throughout the years, Osil worked tirelessly for the mobile blood bank and the Rose Ann Auxiliary at the Corning hospital. She was also a leader for the Holt Lassies 4-H Club.
Left to mourn and cherish Osils memory is her husband, Paul of Corning; two sons: Dr. Douglas Mitchell with wife Norma of Omaha, Nebraska and Stephen Mitchell with wife Jennifer of Arvada, Colorado; two grandchildren: Michele Grabowsky with husband Michael of Omaha, Nebraska and Dr. Cassidy Mitchell with wife Melanie of Lincoln, Nebraska; four great grandchildren: Jamie and Ashley Virgilito of Omaha, Nebraska and Rowen and Chase Mitchell of Lincoln, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Phyllis Steadman as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Osil will be greatly missed by her family and everyone who knew her. She was a graceful woman both in life and death.
