Paul Odson

b. April 10, 1913

Paul Ernest Odson, oldest son of Edward and Matilda (Johnson) Odson was born April 10, 1913 on a farm in Adams County, Iowa, north of Corning.
He started to country school at Hazel Dell west of Carbon. At that time he could speak very little English as his parents spoke Norwegian most of the time.
In the winters of 1933-34 he dug coal at the Charley Dalgetty Coal Mines. During the fall of 1934 there were little or no crops, so in order to have a job, he drove to Newell, Iowa and picked corn by hand for the farmers that had a crop. This was during the Depression when there was little work and NO money.
On January 12, 1935, he was united in marriage to Mildred Irene Anderson at her parents home two miles west of Strand Lutheran Church. They started their married life working on a farm in Montgomery County near Morton Mills. For three years he worked for $25 a month. In 1942 Paul bought his first NEW farm implements, a John Deere “B” tractor, plow and cultivator for $1,140. Prior to this, he had farmed with horses, had kerosene lights and wood burning stoves. Wife Millies most embarrassing moment was when they had company and if they stayed longer than usual, Paul had go out and saw off another chunk of wood. Paul only sawed enough wood for one day at a time. In 1945 Paul and Millie moved to a farm 10 miles south of Corning. This was his first experience with hard surfaced roads and electricity.
Paul farmed from 1935 until 1962 when he started his business as a carpenter and electrician.
