Robert Bob Pangburn

April 23, 1926 — October 4, 2011

Robert (Bob) Pangburn, Corning, Iowa, died October 4, 2011, at the Corning Nursing and Rehab Center following a short illness.
Bob was born April 23, 1926, in Rapid City, SD to Dr. Merrill W. and Constance (Hoyem) Pangburn. The family moved to Scotland, SD and then in 1930 to Miller, SD, where he attended school, graduating in 1944. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946. He attended the University of South Dakota before moving to a ranch south of Miller.
On June 11, 1950 he married the love of his life, Joyce Boyd, and together they ran a ranching/farming operation and raised their family of 4 children: Michael, Ken, Patricia, and Mary. A life-time Presbyterian, he was a charter member of Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church, rural Miller, serving as an elder, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was a member of the South Dakota State Grange, and in 1968 joined the National Farmers Organization (NFO), with which he was affiliated the rest of his professional career.
In 1970 Bob and Joyce moved to Corning, IA, when he was offered a position in the national NFO office. He was employed in a variety of capacities, eventually serving as national treasurer and finally national secretary. He retired when NFO headquarters moved to Ames, IA, in 1990.
Bob was a member of Corning First Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder. He sang in the choir and taught an adult Sunday school class. An avid fisherman, he was able to actively pursue his hobby after retirement. Bob and Joyce enjoyed traveling together and spending time – especially holidays – with their ever-expanding family.
He is survived by Joyce, his wife of 61 years; son Michael, Pierre, SD, and his children Merideth and Christopher Pangburn and their mother Kay Jorgensen; son Ken (Kathy Goldsmith), Corning, IA, and their children Constance (James) Cecil and family Ethan and Caitlin, and Rob (Chelsey Hogan) and son Parker; daughter Mary (Terry) Robison, Rock Port, MO, and her daughter Maggie Underhill (Trystan) Lair and their children Addison and Dylan. In 2004 following Mary and Terrys marriage, 4 step-grandchildren – Mina Hopkins, Chad Robison, Robie Robison, and Terra Asta and their children - became a part of the family.
Other survivors include sisters Merrilyn Baxter, Redfield, SD; Jean (Bob) Goodspeed, Pipestone, MN; Sally (Gary) Kulm, Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law Dee Anderson, Sedalia, MO; brother-in-law Jerry (Jeannette) Boyd, Republic, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Patricia, parents-in-law Elmer and Cecile Boyd, son-in-law Mike Underhill, brothers-in-law Merle Baxter and Dr. John T. Anderson, and niece Tracy Goodspeed Hutson.
