Sam Armstrong, Sr

January 24, 1933 — December 17, 2014

Sam Armstrong, Sr. 81 of Corning, Iowa formerly of Carbon passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at the Corning Nursing and Rehab Center. Sam was born January 24, 1933 to Ilo Armstrong and Annie (Robison) Armstrong in Carbon, Iowa.
Sam attended Carbon School and was later united in marriage to Donna Lou Kingery on June, 3 1954. To this union 2 sons were born: Sammy Jr. and Frankie.
At the age of 13, Sam started working in the Carbon Coal Mines until the age of 18 when Sam enlisted in the United State Marine Corps. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1959. He returned home and Sam and Donna moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa where Sam worked as a foreman at the Campbell Soup Company. In 1964, Sam and his family moved to Carbon, Iowa to start his own business, Sam’s Used Cars. Sam owned and operated his business until retirement in 2012.
Sam had a passion for cars and enjoyed his Saturday nights at the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa. Sam was a member of the Corning American Legion, OURCQ Post #117. Sam enjoyed spending time with his children, playing and fishing with his grandchildren.
Survivors include, three sons: Sammy (Gerry) Armstrong Jr. and Frankie Armstrong, both of Corning and Steve Bass of Omaha, NE; Twelve grandchildren: Jen (Jeff) Armstrong of Windom, MN, Rena (Mike) Mellon of Guttenberg, IA, Anna Armstrong of Omaha, NE, Jamie (Michele) Armstrong of Hastings, NE, Brandie (Chris) Law of Skidmore, MO, Brooke (Tommy)Hensley of Bedford, IA, Storm (Rob) Armstrong, Corning, IA, Liberty (Dalton) Armstrong of Maryville, MO, Lisa (Hector) Soto, Mary Martin, Lee Bass and Steve Bass Jr. of TN. Two step grand-children, Tammy (Frank) Grout and James (Tonya) Ahlhelm. Seven great- grandchildren, nine step great-grandchildren and one step great-great grandchild.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife Donna, parents Ilo and Annie, in-laws Don and Louise Kingery, three sisters: Arlene, Coremay and Darlene; two brothers: Dale and John; and one great-great grandchild, Braylee.
