Shirley Marguerite Wright, the daughter of Obry Lee and Emma Mabel (Parrett) McNiel, was born on February 21, 1920, near Batavia, in Wapello County, Iowa. Shirley entered eternal rest on June 24, 2009, at the Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston, Iowa, at the age of eighty-nine years, two months, and four days.
Shirley graduated from Ottumwa high school with the Class of 1937. Following Shirleys graduation from high school, she moved to Chicago and worked in a law office until her marriage. On June 15, 1941, Shirley married Leland Duane Wright at Batavia, Iowa. In 1948, Shirley moved back to Iowa with her husband and children. Shirley worked as a legal secretary for Arnold Kenyon while he was County Attorney; worked at the General Adjustment Company as secretary for Lloyd Hicks; and worked as secretary at the Federal Land Bank from 1959 until her retirement in 1985. Following her retirement, Shirley continued to work part-time as a legal secretary for several Creston attorneys, most recently for Marion James. In addition, she served as a volunteer teachers aide in Creston elementary schools for twenty-five years.
Shirley was a life long-member of the United Methodist Church in Creston, as well as a patron of music and the arts.
Left to cherish Shirleys memory are her children: Leland (wife Sue Ellen) Wright, Kent, Ohio; Susan (husband Wayne) Weight, Creston; Barbara Widick, Omaha, Nebraska; Four Grandchildren: Brian (wife Stephanie) Wallace, Creston; Laura (husband Chad) Cavey, Castle Rock, Colorado; Elena (husband Andy) Kramer, Winchester, Massachusetts; Rachelle (husband Jim) Anniss, Omaha, Nebraska; Four Great-Grandchildren: Breanna and Brodie Wallace; and Cole and Caden Cavey; her sister: Amy Lee Graybeal, Dallas, Texas; her sister-in-law: Wanda McNiel, Albia, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Preceding Shirley in death were her parents; Husband, in 1997; Three Brothers: Harry, Harley and Herbert; and Three Sisters: Margery, Lois and Carole.
