Shirley N. Lischer

Shirley Mae Nord Lischer died at Villa del Sol Care Center on May 3, 2009. She died peacefully after a long battle with respiratory disease. She was 83 years of age.
Born in Creston, Iowa on July 20, 1925; Shirley was the only child of Alice Brown and Arthur Nord. She attended public school in Creston and graduated from Creston High School in 1943 as her class valedictorian. She graduated from Northwestern University where she received her Bachelors degree in accounting. Later, she obtained her Masters degree in counseling from Drake University.
She married Raymond Lischer on October 29, 1950 and they were the parents of three children: Susan Lewkow (Bill) of Centennial, Colorado, Karen Lischer (Mark Smith) of Marshalltown, and Arthur Lischer (Susan) of Des Moines. She and Ray lived and farmed east of Creston for 51 years. In 1986, Shirley ran for the Iowa House of Representatives.
Shirley taught in the Creston Public Schools and was on the staff of Southwestern Community College for 20 years. She also served as interim director of Crossroads Mental Health Center and was awarded the first displaced workers grant at Southwestern Community College.
Shirley was a lifelong member of First Congregational United Church of Christ and served as treasurer for many years. She also was a liturgist, Sunday school teacher, and sang in the choir.
She was devoted to her grandchildren: Brad and Paige Lewkow, Steven Lischer, and Allie Smith.
