Verlyn Rice

April 3, 1927 — September 12, 2013

Verlyn Clifford Rice, the son of Clifford Allen and Clara Gladys (Vicker) Rice, was born on April 3, 1927 in Nevinville, Iowa. Verlyn entered eternal rest on September 12, 2013 at Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston, Iowa at the age of eighty six years, five months, and nine days.
Verlyn attended school at Colony #4, then attended Nevinville High School and graduated with the Class of 1944. After graduation, he attended Commercial Extension in Omaha, Nebraska and worked for the Sherwin Williams Paint Company. In March, 1945, Verlyn enlisted in the United States Navy and served boot camp at the Great Lakes Training Center. Upon completion of boot camp he was assigned to the Battleship Washington and served in the South Pacific. After a few months, he was sent to Odak in the Aleutians, then to Kodiak, Alaska where he was assigned as personal messenger to Admiral Daubin who was Commander of the 7th Naval District.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy in June of 1946, Verlyn returned to the farm and farmed with his father. On August 31, 1946 he married Alice Lavern Thompson at the Methodist Church in Creston. One son, Greg, was born to this union. Alice died on April 23, 2000.
Verlyn served as Township Clerk for many years. He was also elected to the Nevinville School Board where he served for fourteen years. Verlyn became active in the American Legion and V.F.W. He was instrumental in helping form the Legion in the Old Williamson Hall. He served as Commander, then District Commander. Verlyn became Head of the Children and Youth Committee for the State. He was elected State Vice-Commander, and then was endorsed for State Commander. His plans changed in 1979 when he ran for County Supervisor, in Adams County, and he served in that position for twenty-four years, retiring in 2004. Verlyn was a member of Circle Lodge #555 A.F. and A.M. Prescott, Iowa. On December 28, 2002, he married Mickey Hiley in Griswold, Iowa.
Left to cherish Verlyn’s memory is his second wife, Mickey (Hiley) Rice, Griswold, IA; his son, Greg (Peggy) Rice, Creston; his four grandchildren: Robin (Levi) Buxton; Jake Rice; Chad (Lacey) Rice; and Jeremiah Rice; his three great-grandchildren: Kirby and Cooper Rice; and Annalice Buxton; his sister, Doris (Orville) Lines, Creston; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding Verlyn in death were his parents; and his first wife, Alice.
