Vincent Sullivan

July 21, 1924 — January 31, 2014

Vincent Charles Sullivan, son of William George and Margaret Kathryn (Gross) Sullivan, was born on July 21, 1924 in Corning, Iowa. Vincent entered eternal rest on Friday, January 31, 2014 at the Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston, Iowa at the age of eighty-nine years.
Vincent attended Mercer #4 Country School and Corning High School, graduating with the Class of 1943.
Following high school, Vincent continued his passion of working the farm with his father. He worked horses in the field cultivating corn and beans, mowing and raking hay, leading the horse on the hay fork, and stripping blue grass. Vincent milked sixteen head of dairy cows by hand. He assisted his father with feeding cattle, pigs, chickens and geese. Together Vincent and his father farmed 320 acres by horse and later with a tractor and Jayhawk. They also did custom hay stacking, plowing and picking ear corn.
In the spring of 1947, Vincent went to work at Driskill and Son Blacksmith Shop and in the fall, he was united in marriage to Glenna Mae West. The couple was blessed with three children: Joseph, Ann and Georgia.
Vincent left the blacksmith shop when the poisonous fumes began affecting his health and went to work in the transportation business. Contracting with C.B. Q Railroad, Burlington Truck Lines, Railway Express, U.S. Postal Service, Lowenberg Bakery and hauling milk and cream for the Farmer’s Cooperative for a span of almost twenty-two years of freight delivery and pick-up. Vincent also hauled coal for Akin Lumber, Farmer’s Cooperative Exchange, Pat Paul’s Feed and Supply and many businesses and residential homes. Vincent was also a bus driver in the Corning community for thirty-eight years. Vincent lived his entire life in the Corning Community.
Vincent served one term as Mayor of Corning from 1966-1968 and served on several committees in Des Moines. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Adams County Farm Bureau where he formerly served as President. He was also a former member of the Iowa D.O.T. Commission.
Left to cherish Vincent’s memory are his wife, Glenna Sullivan of Lenox, IA; daughter, Ann (John) Coulter of Creston, IA; son, Joseph (Jeannie) Sullivan of Cumming, IA; four grandchildren: Sarah (Charlie) Davis, Nicole Sullivan, Josh Coulter and Karla (Kenny) Shaw; eleven great-grandchildren; brothers: Tom (Jane) Sullivan of Pearland, TX and Edward (Jeanette) Sullivan of Lawrenceville, GA; sisters: Kathryn Loidolt of Indianapolis, IN and Marjory Gerkin of Carroll, IA and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Vincent was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Georgia Sullivan in 2000; brothers: George and Leo Sullivan.
