Virginia Westlake

August 3, 1946 — March 26, 2011

Virginia Lee Westlake, daughter of Daisy Ruth (Burns) and Glen Phillip Sturdevant, was born on August 3, 1946 in Percival, Iowa. Virginia passed away at her home in Brooks, Iowa on Saturday, March 26, 2011 after a year-long battle with lung cancer.
Virginia lived in Corning and attended country school in Douglas Township prior to graduating from Corning High School with the Class of 1963.
On June 4, 1966, Virginia was united in marriage to Dick Westlake at the United Methodist Church in Corning, Iowa. The young couple moved to Brooks where they have lived for the last 44 years raising their two children: Jeff and Laura.
After high school, Virginia waitressed at Bruce and Lorraine’s Grill and Gentle’s Café. Virginia then went to work with her dad as a Lab Technician at the “Mouse House” in Corning where they bred and raised white mice for scientific study. Later, Virginia worked on and off at Lazy Ike’s, making fishing lures. Virginia enjoyed being a homemaker spending her time with her grandchildren, gardening, planting flowers and hunting morel mushrooms. Throughout the years, Virginia enjoyed helping with the Ladies Aide at the church, serving meals or assisting in any way she could.
Left to cherish Virginia’s memory is her husband, Dick Westlake of Brooks, IA; son, Jeff Westlake of Red Oak, IA; daughter, Laura Pote of Huxley, IA; four grandchildren: Shane and Kameron Westlake of Red Oak, IA and Spencer and Kasie Pote of Huxley, IA; her brother, Phillip (Willa) Sturdevant of Pelsor, AR; her sisters: Glenda (Tiger) Frederick of Corning, IA and Delores Ward of Alamosa, CO; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her sister and brother-in-law: Edith and Jerry Brown; her brother-in-law, Richard Ward, and two infant siblings.
