Bill attended school in Anita until the 6th grade, when his family moved to Macedonia, Iowa. He graduated from Macedonia High School in 1954, where he excelled in basketball, football, track and other school activities. In the summer of 1953, Bill and two friends went to California in his “32” Ford coupe. They toured the state and ended up working in a prune factory to get gas money to return to Iowa.
On March 6, 1961 he was united in marriage to Peggy Glasgow at Red Oak, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Zachary, Paula and Dawn.
Bill took flying lessons and earned his pilot license for small aircraft. He loved cars and his mechanical ability led him to become know as “the man of the pits” at the race track, as he helped many race car drivers. Bill had various jobs but 40 years was spent at Schildberg rock quarries, as a mechanic and scale master.
In 2004, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and then endured three brain surgeries. Three months ago Bill was again diagnosed with lung cancer; he fought very hard for three years. He always had a word to say to everyone. He was lovingly cared for by his wife Peggy.
He was preceded in death by his son, Zachary Hayter; parents, Paul and Mable Hayter; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Presley and Mildred Glasgow; sister-in-law, Betty Reed, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Walter and Judy Glasgow, and brother, Larry Husz.
