William Steele

William Arthur “Bill” Steele, the son of Dwight Ralph and Grace Emma (Wakefield) Steele, was born on July 8, 1920, at Creston, Iowa. Bill entered eternal rest on September 12, 2008 at the Creston Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Creston, Iowa, at the age of eighty-eight years, two months, and seven days.
Bill graduated from Creston High School with the Class of 1938. On September 15, 1940, he married Doris Mae Redburn in Creston.
Bill lived in Creston all of his life. Bill began work in 1938 for Burlington Truck Line. He then went to work for CBQ Railroad in 1941. He worked for the Burlington-Northern Railroad for forty years, retiring in 1981 as a conductor.
Bill was a former member of the Elks Lodge of Creston; an active member of the local United Transportation Union, and served as the local Treasurer, local Chairman and Delegate to the International Unit from 1964 until his retirement in 1981; a member of the Burlington Northern Veterans; and a member of the Lakeshore Golf Club in Afton. Bill helped carve the big bear at McKinley Park and did other wood-carving projects.
Left to cherish Bills memory are his children: Cheryl Finken, Creston; Susan (Dennis) Howard, Gardner, KS; Mark (Kathy) Steele, Waukee, IA; Eight Grandchildren: Scott (Jill) Gaidies, Kelly (Harry) Gaidies-Hauersperger, Ryan (Margo) Finken; Heather (Chris) Heidrich, Eric Howard, Darin Howard, Nick and Michael Steele; Five Great-Grandchildren; One Great-Great Granddaughter; his sisters: Margaret Pontow, Creston; and Kay (Jack) Glover, Hideaway, TX; his Sister-in-Law: Josephine Steele, Creston; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Preceding Bill in death were his Parents; his Wife, in 1988; Two Sons-in-Law: Gary Gaidies and Bob Finken; his Brother: Franklin Steel; Great-Granddaughter: Haley Howard; and Brother-in-Law: Ben Pontow.
