Winifred Henrietta (Clarahan) Britten was born September 29, 1912, to Joseph and Henrietta (Besser) Clarahan in Harper, Iowa. She graduated from Harper High School and Ottumwa Heights College. On June 6, 1933, Winifred married Herman Britten in Harper, Iowa. They moved to Creston in 1933 and lived on their farm until 1998.
Winifred was member of St. Marks Catholic Church, transferred to Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Alter Society, and St. Anns Society in Orient. She was a homemaker and farmed along with her husband. Winifred enjoyed raising dogs, quilting, crocheting, and reading.
Winifred is survived by a son, Philip Britten of Chandler, Arizona; a son-in-law, John Geis of Mountain Home, Arkansas; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Britten of Creston; ten grandchildren: : Linda (Britten) Abbott, Knoxville, Iowa; Stephen (wife Alda) Britten, Mission, Texas; Brian (wife Laura) Britten, Creston; Kevin (wife Angie) Britten, Glenwood, Iowa; Dan (wife Tina) Britten, Orient; Mike (wife Jennifer) Geis, Clive, Iowa; Mark (wife Beth) Geis, West Des Moines, Iowa; Michelle (husband Mark) Retter, Homestead, Iowa; Margaret (husband Mike) Reasoner, Creston; and Mary (husband Shane) Evans, Des Moines, Iowa; 23 Great-Grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Britten in 1977; daughter, Annette Geis in 1989; one brother, four sisters, and her parents.
