Duane "Shorty" Adamson

May 24, 1941 — Jul 8, 2026

Cromwell, Iowa

Duane "Shorty" Merrill Adamson, beloved son, brother, husband, father, and friend, passed away on July 8, 2026, at his home in Cromwell, Iowa. Born on May 24, 1941, in Creston, Iowa, Shorty was a remarkable presence in every room he entered—a man whose restless spirit, unwavering determination, and deep love for his family and community shaped a legacy that will be cherished forever.

Shorty’s journey began in Creston, where he attended Creston Public Schools, forging lifelong friendships and cultivating the lively sense of humor and energy that would endear him to so many throughout his life. Even as a boy, Shorty was not one to sit still—his orneriness and zest for life meant there was always a new project to dream about or an adventure waiting just around the corner.

On August 1, 1959, Shorty married the love of his life, Glenda Kay Belgarde, in Adel, Iowa. Together, they built a partnership grounded in devotion, hard work, and laughter. Their union was further blessed by the arrival of four sons: Kent, Kelly, Keith, and Kris, each of whom carries forward the indomitable spirit and steadfast values of their parents. Side by side, Shorty and Glenda attended every sporting event their children participated in, cheering from the sidelines, volunteering behind the scenes, and proudly running the concession stand at the ball park. The Adamson family was a fixture in the Creston Athletics community—Shorty's booming voice and passionate support never missing a home football game or wrestling meet.

Community service was at the heart of Shorty’s life. He served as Mayor of Cromwell, Iowa, for twelve dedicated years, leading with integrity and a vision for improvement. Professionally, Shorty exemplified diligence and versatility. He worked for Wellman Dynamics for 11 years, He went on to own and operate Adamson Construction for many years, contributing to the landscape and infrastructure of the region he loved. Later, and found purpose and joy in driving a school bus as a para educator for Special Education Students—guiding, protecting, and encouraging young people on their journeys to and from school for another eleven years.

Shorty’s passions went far beyond work. He was a proud former member of the "Road Lords" car club of Adel, Iowa, with his prized 1954 Oldsmobile standing as a testament to his love of classic cars. A fearless racer, Shorty drove stock car #23 at Adams County Speedway for many years, chasing glory on the track with the same vigor he brought to every aspect of his life. His beat didn't stop at the racetrack—he was also the drummer for Chet and the Roadrunners, bringing rhythm and fun to countless gatherings. Perhaps most daring of all, Shorty loved the rodeo and rode as a bareback and saddle bronc rider, proving himself time and again as both courageous and untamable.

Though forever on the move, Shorty’s heart was always anchored by his family. He is survived by his sons Kent (Lindsay), Kelly (Carrie), Keith, and Kris (Tami) Adamson, who mourn the loss of their father with heavy hearts but endless gratitude for the example he set. He is survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brothers Dale and Eddie (Annette) Adamson, and his sister Jan Crawford, who recall with affection Shorty's mischievous smile, fierce loyalty, and unwavering love for his kin. Also surviving are his brother-in-law, Swede (Tana) Belgarde of Urbana, Iowa and sister-in-law, Midge (Steve) Strand of Waukee, Iowa.

Shorty’s journey is now reunited with those who went before him: his devoted wife Glenda; beloved granddaughter Kasey; infant brother; parents Ray Oliver and Evelyn "Irene" Marie Adamson. The memories created with each of them are treasured, and their spirits, undoubtedly, meet him with the same warmth and joy they shared in life.

Duane "Shorty" Adamson leaves an indelible mark on those who knew him—his laughter, generosity, and drive echoing in the stories we share and the lives he touched. Few could keep up with his tireless spirit, and even fewer could imagine life without his kind-hearted mischief and unwavering support.
