Joanne Ruth DeYoung was born on October 16, 1937, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Alvin and Ruth (Zimmer) Potthast. Joanne entered eternal rest on Friday, November 4, 2011 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Corning, Iowa at the age of sevety-four years.
The family, which also included her younger sister, Janyce, later moved from Storm Lake to Minburn, where Joanne graduated from high school in 1955. She attended nursing school in Marshalltown, and soon embarked on a career in nursing that lasted until her cancer diagnosis in February of this year.
Joanne married Jay DeYoung on March 26, 1961, in Perry, Iowa. To this union were born two children: Jeffrey Allen and Jayanne Rae. The couple was divorced in 1995.
Joanne enjoyed many things in her life, including traveling, bowling, collecting, reading and music. She loved being a nurse and devoted her life to caring for people. Joanne worked at Corning Nursing Rehab for more than 40 years.
She was also a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Joanne built her life around her family, and could be found at games, plays and concerts watching her children and grandchildren.
Joanne is survived by her children: Jeff DeYoung of Glenwood and Jayanne DeYoung of Corning; five grandchildren: Josh DeYoung and Rachel DeYoung of Glenwood, Chris Webb and friend Chelsi Smith of Corning, Michael Webb of Corning and Kaitlyn DeYoung of Perry; one great-granddaughter, Zoey DeYoung of Corning; her sister, Jan Evans of Urbandale; her special daughter, Debbie DeYoung of Glenwood; nieces, nephews and many cousins.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Jack Evans.
