Corning

Michael Staples, known affectionately as “M.J.” to his friends at Choice, passed away on June 7, 2026, at CHI Health Mercy Hospital in Corning, Iowa. Born on November 19, 1974, in Creston, Iowa, Michael was a lifelong resident of Corning, where he lived and worked with a quiet dedication.

Michael spent much of his career working as a pallet maker in manufacturing with Innovative Industries. He was known not only for his skill in his work but also for his creativity and inventiveness. Those who knew him remember that Michael loved to sing and play his harmonica, filling rooms with music and joy. His inventive spirit was one of his defining qualities, always thinking of new ideas and ways to improve things.

He was a beloved brother to Angie (Ed) Ramsey of Villisca, Iowa, and a cherished step-son to Papa Billy Yarrington of Corning. Michael was proud of his family, which included four nephews—Jamie (Cassie) Luft of Clarinda, Luke Ramsey of Villisca, Tommy (Destiny) Luft, and Jesse Luft of Villisca —and two nieces, Ali (Kiel) Brittain of Hopkins and Bryleigh Ramsey of Villisca. His family circle extended to his aunts Melody (Joe) Zadina of Corning and Judy (Roger) VanSyoc of Sidney, along with several great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins, all of whom held him in great affection.

Michael’s mentor, Derek Rinehart from Corning, was an important part of his life, supporting and guiding him along the way. He was also deeply cared for by his family at House #1 of Choice, Inc., where he found friendship and community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Staples and Sherry (Means, Staples, Yarrington) as well as his grandparents, Tom Staples and Rowena Staples, Kenneth (Virginia) Means, and Cecil (Grace) Yarrington. Their memory lived on strongly in Michael’s heart.

Michael Staples will be remembered as a man who brought music, invention, and kindness into the lives of those around him. His presence will be missed by all who knew him, especially his loving family and close friends. May his gentle spirit rest in peace.

A small, private service will be held at a later date. Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center was in charge of the arrangements.
