Rick Waymaster

March 27, 1955 — January 7, 2026

Lenox, IA

Rick Dale Waymaster was born on March 27, 1955 in Russell, Kansas. He was the third child born to Leroy and Gloria (Luerman) Waymaster of Bunker Hill, KS. Rick spent his younger years working on the farm with his family. Those years were filled with working wheat and milo harvest, showing animals through 4H, and playing sports with his brothers. Rick graduated from Luray High School, class of 1973, in Luray, KS. Rick grew up in a time of American sporting greats which inspired him to be involved in football, basketball, track, and baseball. He excelled in all sports, even being selected to play in the Kansas All-Star basketball team in 1973 and playing American Legion baseball in the summers. He was again inspired by his love of sports to pursue a degree in Journalism. Rick played both basketball and baseball at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, KS and he graduated from The University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS in 1978. He later went on to graduate from The Colorado Graduate School of Banking in Boulder, CO in 1989. Rick began his working career as a Commodities Broker and then worked as a Banker for most of his career. He enjoyed selling insurance before his retirement.

Rick always wanted to be a sports broadcaster. Instead, he fell deeply in love and married the catch of his life, Reesa Scott, in 1981. Together, they built a life that revolved around their daughter – Anna, who was born in 1987. Rick filled his evenings and weekends watching Anna chase her athletic dreams, a dream they both shared.

Rick and Reesa celebrated 45 years of marriage last week. The pair had recently made the move from their home in Council Bluffs to Lenox, IA where they were enjoying being closer to Anna and her family.

Rick spent countless hours playing catch as a brother, a player, a dad, and a grandpa. The KU Jayhawks were his favorite team, but Cal, Ada, Adlee, and Alex were his favorite players. Rick could always be found in the bleachers at any of their events. He spent his last evening on Earth watching Adlee play basketball for the Lenox Tigers – a kismet tribute, perhaps, for an almost-broadcaster whose love for life and family were far greater than any chance he never took.

Rick is survived by his wife, Reesa of Lenox, IA; daughter Anna (Clint) Crill of Prescott, IA; and three grandchilren: Cal, Adlee, and Alex Crill. He is also survived by his mother, Gloria Waymaster of Russell, KS; brothers Lance (Mary Pat) Waymaster of Russell, KS and Mike (Diane) Waymaster of Bunker Hill, KS; sister-in-law Melanie Waymaster of Lawrence, KS; three nephews and five nieces, along with many other family members.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Leroy Waymaster; in-laws Reese and Virginia Scott, brother Chuck Waymaster; brother-in-law Brad Scott; and granddaughter Ada Crill.
