Robert Burton Cox, youngest son of John and Lottie (McPherren) Cox, was born on Monday, February 23, 1920, four miles east of Corning. Robert entered eternal rest on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at St. Marys Home in Manitowoc, Wisconsin at the age of eighty-eight years, eleven months and twenty-eight days.
Robert started attending Old French Colony country school in 1925. In 1933, he attended Corning High School and graduated with the class of 1937. Robert stayed home and farmed with his dad. In 1941, Robert married Velma Ester Hardisty of rural Corning, in Fulton, Missouri. Velma and Bob started farming on what was known as the “Montalto 80 acres”, a part of the Icarian Colony in 1942. The couples first son, Ronald, was born in December of 1942. In November of 1945 their daughter, Arlene, was born. When Bobs parents retired and moved to Corning, Bob and Velma moved the family onto his parents homestead. The couple had their last child, Roger, in October of 1954. Robert and Velma farmed there for thirty-seven years.
In 1949, the couple was known to have the first TV in Adams County. In 1968, Bob invented a new type of an electric fence bracket. It was patented in 1970.
Robert was a member of the Southwest Iowa Radio Club, Rotary, United Methodist Church, National Farmers Organization and was a H.A.M. radio operator since 1956.
Left to cherish Roberts memory is his wife, Velma Cox of Manitowoc, Wisconsin; children: Ronald (wife Janis) Cox of Indianapolis, Indiana; Arlene (husband John) Kuehnle of Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Roger (wife Gayle) Cox of Lincoln, Nebraska; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Preceding Robert in death were his parents; brother, Ralph J. Cox; infant brother, Arthur M. Cox and sister and brother-in-law: Maxine and Leslie Carothers.
