Robert Aaron Day

Robert Aaron Day, known affectionately as Bob, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, at the age of 93. Born November 3, 1932, in Afton, Iowa, to his parents Frank Edward and Opal Mercedes (Denly) Day. Robert’s life was a testament to hard work, family devotion, and quiet generosity.

Growing up in Afton, Robert attended public schools and graduated with the Class of 1951 from Afton High School. He began building his strong work ethic early, setting up bowling pins at the Afton Bowling Alley, managing a paper route for several years, and working at the local grocery store. He went on to attend Iowa State University in Ames, further solidifying the foundation for his later accomplishments.

Robert bravely answered the call of duty, serving in the United States Army during the Korean War from December 1952 until his honorable discharge in December 1954. The discipline and commitment that marked his military service continued throughout his life.

In 1951, Robert embarked on a lifelong career with the Iowa Highway Commission—now known as the Iowa Department of Transportation—retiring in 1992 after more than four decades of dedicated service. His sense of public duty did not wane with retirement; in 1993, he began part-time employment with FEMA, contributing to the safety and well-being of others until 1996.

Beyond his professional achievements, Robert was happiest when surrounded by those he loved. He was a proud and devoted husband to his beloved wife Regina, cherishing the home and life they built together. Robert was deeply proud of his family, and his legacy can be seen in the generations who survive him.

He is fondly remembered by his sons, Michael (Janette) Day of Camden Point, Missouri, Tom (Tami) Day of Creston, Iowa and Kevin (Christy) Day of Hickory, North Carolina. His grandchildren—Trina (Johnny) Duncan, Jacob Day, Chad (Lindsay) Day, Mindy Gustafson Romanchuk, Alison Gustafson, Jon Gustafson,  Leah Day, Gabrielle Day, Jason Karahan, and Travis Day—were each a source of immense pride. Robert’s joy multiplied with the arrival of his great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Jaida, Grady, Aaron, Brynlee, Hannah, Ace, Gabel, Kru, Knox, and Karter. His brothers, Max (Fran) Day of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and Jim (Carolyn) Day of Indianola, Iowa also survive him.

Robert is preceded in death by his loving wife Regina on November 10, 2025; their sons, Edward Day and Charles Day both on June 20, 1978; his father Frank Day and mother Opal Day; and his sisters Lois Erickson and Carol Miller.

Those who knew Robert remember a man who was playful at heart, but never shied from being stern when necessary—especially when it served to help others learn and grow. Known for his willingness to lend a hand to those ready to help themselves, he set a steadfast example for everyone in his life. In quieter moments, Bob found relaxation and joy in camping (mostly in Colorado), hunting and fishing, hobbies that allowed him to connect with nature and share time with friends and family.

The life of Robert Aaron Day will be honored with an open visitation on July 3, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center in Creston, with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., followed by a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. On July 7, 2026, a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston, with inurnment to follow at Creston Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Union County Historical Village and/or Holy Spirit Parrish in Bob’s memory.

Robert Aaron Day’s legacy is one of hard work, strong principles, and an unwavering devotion to family and community. He leaves behind countless memories and lessons that will continue to inspire and guide his loved ones for generations to come.
