Sandra Kay Lauer, a beloved member of the Cromwell, Iowa community, passed away on June 6, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. She was born on August 2, 1953, in Greenfield, Iowa, to Melvin Donald and Dorothy Irene (Kloppenburg) Moore.

Sandra graduated from Creston High School with the Class of 1971.  She continued her education at DMACC, where she earned an Associate Degree. She worked for 20 years at the Social Security Administration before starting her own dog-grooming and boarding business. Sandra dedicated 25 years to caring for many dogs, showing her deep love and commitment to animals. She was also a long-time Creston and Cromwell bartender, where she was known for her friendly and caring nature.

In 1975, Sandra married James A. Lauer in Creston, Iowa. The couple was blessed with two children before divorcing in 1984. Sandra was a devoted mother to her sons, Shawn Lauer, who lives in Creston with his wife Tracey, and Jesse Lauer of West Des Moines. Her family brought her great joy, including her three grandchildren: Jake McGehee of Cromwell and his wife Maggie, Ashley Coenen of Adel and her husband Tyler, and Brooke McGehee of Creston, Iowa. Sandra’s family also includes five great-grandchildren: Connor, Gus, Drex, Ellie, and Artie, who brightened her life immensely.

Sandra was known as a caring person who enjoyed being active in her community. She loved helping with church dinners and was always willing to lend a hand. Her passion for dogs was well known, and she found happiness in caring for them throughout her career. Sandra was also an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeye Women’s Basketball team, especially Caitlin Clark. She followed Caitlin’s career closely and became a fan of the Indiana Fever professional basketball team.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Dorothy Moore. She is survived by her sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and extended family members who loved her dearly. She will be missed by all who knew her for her kindness, care, and active spirit.

Sandra Kay Lauer’s life was one of dedication to her family, community, and the animals she so lovingly cared for. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her.

A Celebration of Life will be held at later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to the: Sandra Lauer Memorial Fund (to be established at a future date), in care of Shawn Lauer, 1206 N. Cedar Street, Creston, Iowa. Pearson Family Funeral Service & Cremation Center is in charge of the arrangements.
